Wine route in Priorat

The remote, rocky hills of the Priorat wine region are the birthplace of intense, minerally red that many wine writers and collectors consider to be Spain's most elite wines. The distinctive slate-and-quartzite soil (locally called llicorella), an abundance of sunshine and group of young winemakers have earned the region a reputation as one of Spain's most innovative, while the area's pristine natural beauty and long history make it a fascinating place to explore on a food and wine tour.

The orography is uneven and this means that the vine cultivation is difficult and costly.

This wine region is located in the county of el Priorat, in central southern Tarragona, just two hours from Barcelona city.

The Priorat, as it is known in the Catalan language (Priorato in Castilian), is named after the priory settled here in the hills above Tarragona by Carthusians who arrived from Provence in the 12th century.

Nowadays the old monastery is in ruins, although it is still a favorite destination for visitors to the area.

Leaving Barcelona at 8:30am, we will arrive to our first winery in Priorat region around 10:30am. We will be received by a member of the company that will explain us about their vines, wines and elaboration process. If the weather allows it, we will go to the vineyards. The visit will finish with the tasting of their wines.

For lunch we can book a nice local restaurant for you. Lunch is not included in the wine tour price.

After lunch we will visit another of the famous wineries in the region, where the visit will include approximately the same as the one in the morning, helping us to see two different philosophies of elaborating quality wines.

The wineries we like to visit are our special and accurate selection, family business, away from crowds. To keep them in such a way as long as possible we have decided not to publish their names on our website.

* This is a tour that may last between 11 and 12 hours since Priorat is located around 2 hours south from Barcelona
* We can also do the tour shorter visiting just one winery and driving back to the city after lunch ,this would be a 8- 9 hours tour
