Penedés is a wine region located aprox. 45 minutes ride south from Barcelona city. An area extended between the Catalan coastal hills and the narrow plains of the Mediterranean coast.
26000 ha (64000 acres) of Penedés Appellation (D. O. Penedés) where traditional grape varieties are still being cultivated (Xarel-lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Ull de Llebre…) next to other international noble ones that have been introduced and successfully acclimatized (Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Merlot and Pinot Noir). The grapes grow from the coast level up till 800 m (2600 feet) above the sea level.
The Penedés climate includes a wide range of microclimates, but generally speaking it is a typically Mediterranean one. The harvest usually starts late in August and it finishes late in October, depending on the ripening of varieties.
Most Penedés wines are young ones but of high aromatic quality and their characteristics vary depending on the harvest. There are though several wineries dedicated as well to make very good white, rosé and red wines aged for months or years in oak casks followed by the aging continued in their glass bottles.
A very well known Penedés product famous around the world is the Cava, the high quality sparkling wine produced according to the “Mèthode Champenoise” also known as the “traditional method”. “Cava” is the name given to this sparkling wine made in Spain, where a 90% of its production comes from Catalonia, specially from Penedés area. The Cava is ruled by the D. O. Cava. (Cava Origen Appellation)
Enjoying the autochthonous: cava, wine and the good food
In this route we will leave the city of Barcelona early in the morning to visit two prestigious and beautiful wineries.
The wineries we work with are small or middle size family ones. We like you to be received by somebody from the family or a person very committed with the company. Small and private tours that permit you to ask any question you have and to feel the love and passion of these winemakers. When possible we try to bring you to the vineyards, to see them from close by, before visiting the wine elaboration areas. The visit ends with a guided tasting of several of their wines.
The wineries we like to visit are our special and accurate selection, family business, away from crowds. To keep them in such a way as long as possible we have decided not to publish their names on our website.
For lunch we can book a nice local restaurant for you. Lunch is not included in the wine tour price.
This excursion is available as a 4, 6 or 8 hours tour.
